Conaf Biobío filed a complaint for illegal logging of native tree in Nonguén National Park

The National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) filed a complaint with the Hualqui Police Station for the unauthorized cutting of an oak specimen inside Nonguén National Park, an act that directly affects the natural heritage of this protected wilderness area.

According to the information gathered by the institution's inspectors, it concerns a tree approximately 45 centimeters in diameter and 20 meters tall, whose cutting represents considerable damage to the native forest and to the natural values that the unit seeks to protect and conserve.

The regional director of Conaf Biobío, Álvaro González, emphasized that the Corporation will maintain a firm stance against any action that affects natural resources and, particularly, ecosystems under official protection.

"We will be categorical in the face of any action that affects our native forests and, especially, those located within a National Park. The unauthorized cutting of this oak is a serious act that must be investigated and sanctioned in accordance with current regulations. Therefore, we will continue inspecting and taking all necessary measures to safeguard our natural heritage."

The official also highlighted the inspection and surveillance work carried out by Conaf and Carabineros' OS5 during recent months, noting that crimes associated with timber theft had dropped to zero.

"It is important to note that over the last nine months we had managed to keep crimes associated with timber theft inside Nonguén National Park at zero. We had not had any incident to regret during this period. That is why this event concerns us and reinforces the need to continue with security, surveillance, and protection measures inside the Park," he added.

Conaf reiterates its commitment to the protection and conservation of native forests and protected wilderness areas, calling on the community to actively collaborate in their care and to promptly report any situation that could affect these spaces of high environmental value for the Biobío Region.
