A 37-year-old individual was arrested in the Coi Coi sector of Quellón, accused of causing a forest fire that consumed nearly one hectare of vegetation. The emergency, which required the intervention of Firefighters, Carabineros, and Saesa personnel, was due to the detainee's illegal use of fire, a practice prohibited in the region during this season.

The fire, which got out of control due to carelessness, is still being fought by emergency teams, with aerial and ground support. The National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) reported that this is the second arrest of the season for forest fires, following a similar incident in Puqueldón.

The subject, identified by the initials S.E.N.O., was caught in the act by Carabineros from the Sixth Police Station of Quellón, following a telephone alert about the blaze. During the hearing, the defense attorney argued that the arrest was illegal, maintaining it was negligence and not an intentional act. However, Judge Paola Barra validated the apprehension, and the prosecutor requested severe precautionary measures, given the seriousness of the crime.

Despite the defense, which emphasized the lack of intent and the detainee's cooperation in extinguishing the fire, the judge dismissed pretrial detention and opted for nightly house arrest and biweekly check-ins.

In a previous case, another resident of Puqueldón was arrested for causing a fire while conducting agricultural cleanup without proper authorization. This fire affected 1,200 square meters of scrubland. The individual, with initials N.A.A.P., was formally charged and accepted a conditional suspension of the proceedings, committing to donate to the Fire Department and establish a fixed residence.

These incidents highlight the importance of prevention and compliance with regulations to avoid forest fires, especially during high-risk periods.
