With the aim of fostering a preventive culture from classrooms to families and communities, the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) and the Carabineros Prefecture of the Biobío Province formalized a collaborative effort that will reinforce student training in wildfire prevention, environmental care, and risk management.
The initiative was presented at the República de Grecia School in the Los Ángeles commune, a venue that served as the launch site for a program that will benefit 16 Community School Brigades belonging to the Carabineros-Community Integration Model (MICC), present in various educational establishments across the province.
As part of the agreement, Conaf will provide ongoing technical support to these brigades through specialized training, educational materials, and dissemination tools aimed at strengthening knowledge about natural resource protection and preventive actions against wildfires.
The regional director of Conaf, Álvaro González, explained that the strategy seeks to instill environmental awareness from an early age, convinced that students can become agents of change within their homes and neighborhoods.
"Prevention begins with education. When children and young people understand the value of our forests and the risks posed by wildfires, that learning is transmitted to their families and helps generate more responsible communities committed to caring for the territory," he stated.
The program includes educational activities designed for students to recognize the main causes of wildfires, understand their environmental, social, and economic consequences, and learn concrete measures to prevent such emergencies.
Carabineros highlighted that the active participation of school brigades strengthens the bond between the police institution, educational establishments, and the community, creating spaces for collaboration that promote safety and civic responsibility.
The prefect of the Carabineros Prefecture of the Biobío Province, Colonel Emerson Carrasco, valued the joint work with Conaf, noting that coordination between both institutions will enhance the preventive work already carried out by the Community School Brigades in different communes of the territory.
The authority added that incorporating content related to environmental protection and wildfire prevention expands the formative role of these student organizations, strengthening values such as commitment, solidarity, and respect for the environment.
The alliance is part of the preventive strategy that both institutions promote throughout the year, especially in a region where wildfires represent one of the main threats to people, biodiversity, and productive activity.
Through this joint effort, Conaf and Carabineros aim to make environmental education a permanent pillar of training, encouraging new generations to take an active role in protecting forests and contributing to building communities better prepared to prevent such emergencies.
