The regional director of ProChile Maule, Consuelo Urrutia, visited the facilities of the Compañía Chilena de Fósforos, in the commune of Retiro, province of Linares.
There she met with its general manager, Jaime Venegas, where the authority learned in detail about the operations of this Chilean company, consolidated as a benchmark in the manufacturing of sustainable wood products made from poplar.
During the visit, Jaime Venegas highlighted that one of the company's main strengths is "the complete traceability of its products."
He explained that, thanks to its certifications, it is possible to know the exact origin of the wood, from the plantation to the final product, complying with stringent environmental and due diligence standards.
The company markets its products in Chile under the brands "Los Andes" and "Copihue," while in international markets it mainly exports under the brand "Diamond," especially to the United States.
It also ships to Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Japan, and Argentina. Currently, exports represent about 40% of its revenue, a process in which it has had the support of ProChile to strengthen its presence in those markets.
"Exports from the forestry sector are very important for the Maule Region. During the first half of the year, shipments from this sector reached US$336 million, mainly in cardboard, cellulose, wood panels, and sawn or planed wood, whose main destination markets are China, Mexico, and the United States," said the director of ProChile.
"The merit is twofold, because it takes advantage of a fast-growing tree, such as poplar, different from the species traditionally used by the sector, like radiata pine and eucalyptus," Urrutia emphasized.
"Furthermore, it adds value by transforming it into everyday products that replace single-use plastics, thus contributing to a more sustainable industry with greater value for Chilean exports," she added.
