An investigation carried out by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Brigade (BICRIM) La Unión of the PDI, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office, made it possible to dismantle a criminal structure under investigation for its alleged participation in various crimes, including usurpation and illegal extraction of timber from private forest estates.
According to the evidence gathered during the proceedings, one of the members of the organization allegedly used private forest lands to carry out the logging and illegal extraction of trees, subsequently transporting the timber for sale to third parties as firewood.
The investigation also established the alleged existence of a structure in which its members allegedly assumed different roles to carry out the illicit activities and subsequently market the products obtained.
The operation also made it possible to link those under investigation to other crimes, including receiving stolen goods, cattle rustling, violation of secrecy, obstruction of justice, malicious use of a public instrument and clandestine slaughtering.
Among those detained are two active officers of Carabineros de Chile and a former officer of the institution, who, according to the investigation records, would be linked to the illicit activities under investigation.
During the operation, the detectives also seized approximately 430 kilos of beef, which was in the process of clandestine slaughtering inside a warehouse located in a home. The product remained without a cold chain and in conditions that did not meet health requirements.
Due to the conditions in which the meat was found and the records related to its origin, the Los Ríos Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Health proceeded to seize it, within the framework of its health inspection powers.
The investigation seeks to determine the level of participation of each of those involved and the manner in which this structure was allegedly organized to carry out the various illicit activities. Among the events under investigation, timber theft constitutes one of the main lines of evidence, due to the alleged use of private forest estates to obtain and subsequently market the resource.
The evidence collected by the PDI was handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office. Those detained were placed at the disposal of the justice system and will be formally charged this Thursday before the La Unión Guarantee Court, where the Prosecutor's Office will present the events under investigation and the participation it attributes to each defendant.
