The Los Ríos region concentrates the highest number of investigations for timber theft at the national level, with 80 cases in the last two years, according to information revealed by the PDI.
The figure represents about 40% of the 201 cases recorded in the country between January 2024 and August of this year.
Additionally, in the report issued by the civil police, Los Ríos concentrates the highest number of people detained or charged, with 111 linked to this type of crime.
Of the regional total, 72 cases correspond directly to timber theft by natural persons, while another 8 are related to the possible participation of companies or private entities.
The national chief of Crimes against the Environment and Cultural Heritage of the PDI, prefect Patricio Rojas, stated that Los Ríos is among the three regions with the highest occurrence of timber theft and illegal logging, along with Bío Bío and La Araucanía.
"Three regions at the national level where the highest occurrence of this type of crime takes place. We have the Bío Bío region, Araucanía and in third place the Los Ríos region, where this type of crime mostly occurs. We are working on it, we have here a brigade of environmental crime investigators for carrying out our investigations," Rojas added.
The official explained that the PDI is addressing these incidents also considering the environmental impact and seeking to determine whether they correspond to individual actions or whether there is participation by criminal organizations.
In the region, these investigations are supported by the Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade (Bidema), which works in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office, private companies and academia.
